Autism is a medically complex disorder which presents unique complications for physicians, including the ability to manage patients with aggressive behaviors, the additional and costly time it takes to evaluate and treat non-verbal complex patients, and the lack of training in medical school or continuing medical education addressing these issues.

Studies show physicians are overwhelmed and report low self-perceived competency, a lack of care coordination, a lack of physician education, and reimbursement issues treating this population as compared to other chronic illnesses. Additionally, health care reimbursement policies make collaborative efforts prohibitive leaving parents frustrated by disjointed healthcare from a medical community forced to operate in silos, resulting in fragmented plans of care.

What Does a Participating Provider Do?

The Autism Think Tank does not provide direct patient care, rather we help to educate the families and their physicians about the latest research and evidenced based practices that may help diagnose and treat the underlying medical complexities that could be contributing to the severity of autism symptoms especially self-injurious and aggressive behaviors. Often, these behaviors are misinterpreted as behavioral disorders as opposed medical symptoms.

The family’s participating provider is an essential part of the Autism Think Tank process as they are the providers of direct patient care and will also serve to connect the family with local experts who can review the suggestions provided by the Autism Think Tank.

Participating providers act as the quarterback of the plan of care developed in collaboration with the patient’s family and our Think Tank medical experts.
